Flying smt components
Hi - I have been using the reflow kit for a months now, and have been getting good results. However, on a couple of occasions I have had a 8-pin smt IC "jump" off the board whilst in the oven during soldering. Has anyone else had this problem, or know a cause?

Hi Andy,
I have asked our assembly people and unfortunatily they have not come across this problem.
They did offer a suggestion that it could be a problem with moisture(Solder Paste,Pcb or Component) which explodes at a certain temperature.

Sorry I cannot be of any more help.

Best Regards

Re: Flying smt components
Maybe some other solvent got into the solder paste and is making the joints pop like popcorn? :)

If it is a QFN part or some other part that has has a pad on the bottom, this could be caused by too much paste on the bottom pad causing outgassing, though that normally just results in solder splashes.

Or maybe something is contracting in the heat and acting as a spring? I don't know how to remedy this besides experimenting with times and temperatures.
